Yana Richens is the 8th Mary Seacole Scholar and the first midwife to receive the award of £25,000. Yana has a wide variety of clinical experience as a nurse and a midwife, both in a hospital and community setting, as a research and development fellow for the Royal College of Nursing.

 

Yana was an invited member of the Department of Health steering group for Making a difference for midwives, and a member of the external working group for the Maternity module of the National Service Framework.

 

Yana’s main interest lays within the field of women’s health particularly in lower socioeconomic groups and black and minority ethnic women, and continues to raise the issue of inequalities in the health of these women at every opportunity.

 

Currently Yana is employed by University College London Hospitals as a consultant midwife in Public Health and is on the editorial board for the British Journal of Midwifery.
